Fourth wall breaks abound, meta commentary about TV tropes and cliches, the framing of Harris’s life as flashbacks and formula stories – author Charles Yu throws it all into the mix, twisting and mixing the expectations in playful, clever ways that allow him to explore his big ideas in a thoughtful manner while never letting the book become heavy or grim. It doesn’t take long, though, for Interior Chinatown’s structure to reveal that it’s far more playful and less restricted than that screenplay format might lead you to think. But right now, he’s just Generic Asian Male, working his way through bit parts and cameo roles in this Chinatown-set police procedural. One day, Willis thinks, one day he’ll be the biggest role “someone like him” can be – he’ll be Kung Fu Guy. In the broadest terms, Interior Chinatown takes the form of a screenplay – specifically, a script for the cop show Black and White, a show on which our protagonist, Willis Wu, currently works as an extra. But really, winning that award might give the impression that Interior Chinatown is one of those Big Serious Important Novels, and that couldn’t be further from the truth – no, the book is fun, funny, clever, and entertaining, even as it’s handling some very big ideas and doing so with grace and care. I didn’t realize that Charles Yu’s Interior Chinatown had won the National Book Award until after I finished it, but really, it didn’t come as a surprise – when a book this sharp and clever comes along, grappling with ideas about parenting and Asian stereotypes and media, it shouldn’t be a shock to find it acclaimed and awarded.

When Möller contacts the base and unintentionally speaks directly to Fairburne, he panics knowing Fairburne is fully aware of the project and needs to launch immediately before the Allies can react. With this and discovering a map of targets that include several major cities in the United States, Fairburne quickly pieces together that "Kraken" is meant to use the U-boats to slip past the Allies deep into the Atlantic Ocean and use the V-2s on civilian targets to deter the United States' war efforts. Fairburne manages to drive out the occupying force allowing the Rangers to reclaim the village before leaving to investigate a facility where additional weapons testing is being done with V-2 rockets. Fairburne manages to destroy the submarine adding embarrassment to the Nazi high command, but results in Möller redoubling his efforts and proceeding with the project without the test data.įollowing the Normandy beach landings, Fairburne regroups with the Rangers as part of an airborne landing into France but the unit's glider is shot down near the village of Desponts-Sur-Douve. Charlie smuggles him onto an island in the English Channel near Guernsey, where intel from the factory found a prototype U-boat constructed and prepared for testing using the stealth plating previously smuggled onto the island with coordination from the Japanese. In defiance of Ranger orders, Fairburne infiltrates a factory constructing war machinery and submarine stealth plating and destroys it to disrupt further production. After breaking in and securing information on "Kraken" from the chateau and a high-ranking meeting taking place at the cathedral Beaumont-Saint-Denis, Möller becomes aware of Fairburne's involvement and his prior notoriety of disrupting high-profile Nazi projects. Fellow contact Marie Chevalier informs the pair that Möller is occupying a nearby chateau and leaving to investigate. Upon arrival in the village and rendezvousing with resistance contact Charlie Barton, the Americans' submarine is destroyed and Charlie informs Karl that most of the group's contacts have been killed by units led by Obergruppenführer Abelard Möller after discovering information on his involvement in coordinating "Operation Kraken". SOE sniper Karl Fairburne is attached to an Army Ranger battalion in advance of Operation Overlord to assist with securing a beachhead and the village of Colline-Sur-Mer to help give the Americans a foothold and landing point in France. Weapons in the game can be customized extensively. When the player kills an enemy using a sniper rifle from a long distance, the X-Ray kill cam system will activate, in which the game's camera follows the bullet from the sniper rifle to the target, and shows body parts, bones or internal body organs being broken or ruptured by the bullet. Similar to Sniper Elite 4, the game features several large levels, which provide players with various opportunities to infiltrate and extract. Similar to its predecessors, Sniper Elite 5 is a third-person shooter. It was released on May 26, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The first three habits surround moving from dependence to independence (i.e., self-mastery): Each of the seven habits has a chapter of the book (or a section of the videotape or DVD) devoted to it: The final, seventh habit is intended to help maintain these achievements. The next three habits are intended to help achieve interdependence. Stephen Covey, The 7 habits of highly effective people (1998) Įach of the first three habits is intended to help achieve independence. Interdependence is the attitude of "we": we can co-operate we can be a team we can combine our talents. Interdependence is essential for good leaders good team players a successful marriage or family life in organizations. The third and highest level in the Maturity Continuum is interdependence. There is a far more mature and more advanced level. It is the avowed goal of many individuals, and also many social movements, to enthrone independence as the highest level of achievement, but it is not the ultimate goal in effective living. Independence means you are pretty much free from the external influence support of others. or you don't come through and I blame you for the result. Dependence is the attitude of "you": you take care of me. I may be intellectually dependent on other people's thinking I may be emotionally dependent on other people's affirmation and validation of me. All of us began life as an infant, depending on others for nurturing and sustenance. At birth, everybody is dependent, and characteristics of dependence may linger this is the first and lowest stage of maturity.ĭependence means you need others to get what you need. These are three successive stages of increasing maturity: dependence, independence, and interdependence. that two people can see the same thing and yet differ from each other.Ĭovey also introduces the maturity continuum. Covey presents his teachings in a series of habits, manifesting as a progression from dependence through independence on to interdependence.Ĭovey introduces the concept of paradigm shift and helps the reader understand that different perspectives exist, i.e. Our values govern our behavior, while principles ultimately determine the consequences. He sees principles as external natural laws, while values remain internal and subjective. In doing this, Covey distinguishes principles and values. He promotes what he labels the character ethic: aligning one's values with so-called universal and timeless principles. Covey argues against what he calls the personality ethic, that he sees as prevalent in many modern self-help books. publishing history to sell more than one million copies. The audio version became the first non-fiction audio-book in U.S. This best-known book of Covey has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide since its first publication. He further claims that effectiveness can be expressed in terms of the P/PC ratio, where P refers to getting desired results and PC is caring for that which produces the results. He illustrates this by referring to the fable of the goose that laid the golden eggs. Covey presents an approach to being effective in attaining goals by aligning oneself to what he calls "true north" principles based on a character ethic that he presents as universal and timeless.Ĭovey defines effectiveness as the balance of obtaining desirable results with caring for that which produces those results. However, remarkably, the younger rats, which had apparently forgotten the initial experience, subsequently showed they actually had kept a trace of the memory. In contrast, the rats exposed to the shock compartment at 24 days of life learned and retained the memory for a long time and avoided this place-revealing a memory similar to that of adult rats. The authors found infantile amnesia for the 17 day-old rats, which showed avoidance of the “shock” compartment right after the experience, but lost this memory very rapidly: a day later these rats quickly returned to this compartment. The first set of results was not surprising. If the rat entered the shock compartment, it received a mild foot shock. After 10 seconds, the door separating the compartments was automatically opened, allowing the rat access to the shock compartment. During the experiment, each rat was placed in the safe compartment with its head facing away from the door. To do so, rodents were placed in a box divided into two compartments: a “safe” compartment and a “shock” compartment. Adult rats, like humans, remember unpleasant or painful experiences that they had in specific places, and then avoid returning to them. The episodic memory tested in the rodents was the memory of an aversive experience: a mild foot shock received upon entering in a new place. In addressing this matter, Alberini and her colleagues compared rats’ infantile memory with that when they reached 24 days old-that is, when they are capable of forming and retaining long-term memories and at an age that roughly corresponds to humans at six to nine years old. The phenomenon, referred as to “infantile or childhood amnesia,” is in fact the inability of adults to retrieve episodic memories that took place during the first two to four years of life. This is the equivalent of humans under the age of three and when memories of who, what, when, and where-known as episodic memories-are rapidly forgotten. In their study, which appears in the journal Nature Neuroscience, the researchers examined the mechanisms of infantile memory in rats-i.e., memories created 17 days after birth. Sinai and Robert Blitzer, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, included: Alessio Travaglia, a post-doctoral researcher at NYU Reto Bisaz, an NYU research scientist at the time of the study Eric Sweet, a post-doctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. The other authors of the study, conducted in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. “Without this, the neurological system runs the risk of not properly developing learning and memory functions.” “What our findings tell us is that children’s brains need to get enough and healthy activation even before they enter pre-school,” explains Cristina Alberini, a professor in NYU’s Center for Neural Science, who led the study. The research, conducted by scientists at New York University’s Center for Neural Science, reveals the significance of learning experiences over the first two to four years of human life this is when memories are believed to be quickly forgotten-a phenomenon known as infantile amnesia. A new study on infantile memory formation in rats points to the importance of critical periods in early-life learning on functional development of the brain. Again, this enables you to make the most of your workspace. Multiple Reference Images can be pinned to your screens so that you can use them as you paint, which is handy in itself, but they can be re-sized, repositioned and also zoomed into if you only need to look at one specific area. ArtRage 5 enables you to choose options such as how much paint is loaded and how well it mixesĪnother new feature in version 5 is its ability to import photos or images as both reference images and tracing images. Some older references include Y as a match between gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans, but chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans have recently been found to share a large transposition from chromosome 1 to Y not found in other apes. Chimpanzees and humans match on 1, 2p, 2q, 5, 7–10, 12, 16, and Y as well. Chromosomes 3, 11, 14, 15, 18, and 20 match between gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans. Chromosomes 6, 13, 19, 21, 22, and X are structurally the same in all great apes. Humans have one pair fewer chromosomes than other apes, as humans have 23 chromosome pairs, and chimpanzees have 24, with ape chromosomes 2 and 4 fused in the human genome into a large chromosome (which contains remnants of the centromere and telomeres of the ancestral 2 and 4). Īll great apes have similar genetic structure. On the other hand, rabbits and hares look very similar, but are only distantly related and cannot hybridize. For example, pugs and huskies look quite dissimilar, but belong to the same species and subspecies and can hybridize freely. However, genetic similarity, and thus the chances of successful hybridization, is not always correlated with visual appearances. Hybridization between chimpanzees and bonobos has been documented, as they share 99.6% of their genomes. Ĭhimpanzees and humans are closely related, sharing 95% of their DNA sequence and 99% of coding DNA sequences. The possibility of hybrids between humans and other apes has been entertained since at least the medieval period Saint Peter Damian (11th century) claimed to have been told of the offspring of a human woman who had mated with an ape, and so did Antonio Zucchelli, an Italian Franciscan capuchin friar who was a missionary in Africa from 1698 to 1702, and Sir Edward Coke in "The Institutes of the Lawes of England". The portmanteau humanzee for a human–chimpanzee hybrid appears to have entered usage in the 1980s. Serious attempts to create such a hybrid were made by Soviet biologist Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov in the 1920s, and possibly by researchers in China in the 1960s, though neither succeeded. The software will continue to be far from perfect for the foreseeable future. The humanzee (sometimes chuman, manpanzee or chumanzee) is a hypothetical hybrid of chimpanzee and human, thus a form of human–animal hybrid. These points are not to shame Google, Nikon, or HP, which are companies that have no malicious intent behind their facial recognition software. However, it quickly started tracking a white woman's face as soon as she walked in front of the camera. Although it was designed to follow the faces of all users, it couldn't recognize the African-American man moving in front of it. As a Japanese company, Nikon apparently neglected to design its camera with Asian eyes in mind.Ī few months after the Nikon controversy, a Youtube video about an HP MediaSmart Computer went viral. Furthermore, many Native American dancer photos were tagged with the word “costume,” which added great insult to the community.īack in 2009, Nikon's face-detection cameras were accused of being “racist.” Many times, when an Asian face was photographed, a message flashed across the screen asking, "Did someone blink?” - even when their eyes were wide open. This past May, Flickr's facial recognition software labeled both black and white people as “animals” and “apes” (these tags were promptly removed). This is not the first time that facial recognition software, which is based on machine learning and computer vision, has messed up its identification of people. |
